Voicemails From My Lieutenant Commander
My son John was a lieutenant commander in the Navy, a USNA graduate and an Eagle Scout who also loved the American railroads. He died of brain cancer two years ago. Over the years, he left us many, many messages from the Arabian Gulf, the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., Naval Station Everett, aboard USS Abraham Lincoln and from Pearl Harbor. His happy, cheerful voice has left us many, many 'Happy Birthdays' and news about promotions, new assignments and trains spotted out West. Voicemails forever allowed me to save for posterity that happy beautiful voice that brought a smile to my face and joy to my heart every time we came home to hear a new message from him.
